This position will serve as a Physical Therapist (Clinical Specialist/Primarily assigned to Outpatient Services) at the Central Virginia VA Health System (CVVHS) in Richmond, VA, evaluating and treating patients in a specialty area acting as an autonomous provider utilizing advanced knowledge and expertise of a variety of diagnoses across the continuum of care while participating in intramural and extramural research committees. Responsible for advanced examination and treatment of patients referred to content specialty area; Providing in-service and clinical training programs assigned; Evaluating a wide variety of patients, interpreting consults from primary care physicians and evaluating patients' level of function, e.g. balance, muscle strength, range of motions, etc. using complex evaluation procedures; Utilizing evaluation data to implement a treatment plan in collaboration with the patient which includes both short and long term goals with timeframes of achievement; Evaluating patient's need for assistive devices and training patients in their use; Documenting in patient's medical record the results of the initial evaluation, treatment plans, and changes in patient's status within department guidelines; Screening new referrals and identifying patients who may benefit from physical therapy; Applying clinically appropriate assessment techniques and treatment interventions to address human pathophysiology and dysfunction in the specialty population; Responsible for program development, refining present programs, and ongoing evaluation of program effectiveness; Utilizing complex tools in the evaluation and treatment of outpatients with varying clinical presentations, including those with falls; Serving as the subject matter expert in the content specialty area and as a consultant to physical therapy and other medical center staff in evaluating and treating patients in the specialty area; and Displaying advanced clinical practice skills in the evaluation and treatment of physical therapy patients who present with highly complex and varied combinations of medical diagnoses using specialized evaluation tools, treatment procedures and unusual motivational skills.
